Chapter Thirty-Eight
Rika had taken a cautious approach, Jo sitting beside her with her hands on the weapons controls, ready to fire should any hostile actions require it. But all appeared to be calm down below.
What they saw as they circled the area was simply Eddie parked in another clearing. As before, the local vegetation had been uprooted, but there was something else this time. Signs of a fight.
âKeep your eyes peeled,â Rika said as she set the ship down and slid her most powerful konus, the one gifted her by Bawb not so long ago, onto her wrist. âCome on.â
The pair stepped out of the Fujin and joined their friends as they surveyed the area. The atmosphere was quite breathable, and with all of the vegetation of this world, the air was exceptionally refreshing. And there was something more to it, it seemed. Something they couldnât quite place.
Hunze, on the other hand, seemed abuzz with excitement as she picked up the remnants of plants left scattered around the landing zone.
âWhatâs she doing?â Rika quietly asked Leila. âSheâs sniffing them.â
âSheâs an Ootaki,â Leila replied. âHer kind not only produce power, but are also sensitive to certain types. And here, on this weird world, she smells magic.â
âMagic? I donât feel it?â
âYouâre human. From this galaxy. Your bodyâs systems are different than ours,â the olive-skinned woman replied.
Hunze padded across the upturned ground to her friends. âThis is unlike any magic Iâve ever felt,â she said, clearly agitated. âAnd thereâs a lot of it in some of these plants. Like, they absorb the power from the sun and convert it to this magical energy.â
âKind of like your hair or Araâs skin,â Ripley noted.
âYes,â the golden-haired woman replied. âBut this is strong. And dangerous.â
âDangerous? Why do you say that?â
âSomething feels wrong about it,â Hunze replied.
Jo walked over to a chopped-up shrub and picked up the remains. âWhy are they tearing up the plants, then?â
âBecause there is power here, donât you see?â Hunze said, on edge. âThey appear to be attempting to gather a new source of power. One they can harvest.â
âTo what end, though?â Jo wondered.
âIt is only a guess,â Hunze said, âbut I think they are trying to gather enough power to retrieve the portal from the sun.â
âBut you said this magic was dangerous.â
âYes, but maybe they think itâs worth it for a one-time spell.â
âUh, guys?â Ripley said, concern in her voice. âYou need to see this.â
The others quickly made their way to her side. What had caught her attention was a pool of green on the ground.
âIs that Tslavar blood?â Hunze asked.
âFrom personal experience, I can definitely confirm that,â Rika replied. Sheâd slain her fair share of Tslavars in the not-so-distant past. And someone had done the same here. Recently, by the look of it.
âI see signs of a hasty retreat,â she noted, scanning the bootprints on the ground.
Rika followed the tracks, pools of drying green blood spattering the ground as the gravely injured aliens fled back to their ship.
âHere. They boarded here,â she said, pointing to where all tracks ceased.
